Putting together an "Illness Kit"
  • Ketone Strips/Blood Glucose Strips
  • Thermometer
  • Glucagon Kit (for insulin-dependent diabetics)
  • Medications (fever reducers, anti-nausea meds, sore throat lozenges, decongestants, cough medicine)
  • Foods/Liquids: sugar-free and sugared drinks for hydration (avoid caffeine products), broth, popsicles (sugar-free and sugared), graham crackers, saltines, broth, Gatorade, gelatin...
Sick Day Plans/Sick Day Guidelines
Make a written plan with your diabetes team that answers:
  • How often to test for glucose and ketones
  • What to do when ketones are present
  • What to do when blood sugars are elevated
  • What are the proper medication dosages (supplemental insulin/correction boluses for insulin pump users)
Don't forget to include your medical team's phone number on this written plan!
